Walk-In Cooler & Freezer Guide

Walk-in coolers and freezers

Home › Commercial Refrigeration Guide › Walk-In Cooler & Freezer Guide

Updated October 14, 2026

Quick answer

A walk-in has two halves: the insulated box (panels, floor, door) and the refrigeration system (evaporator inside, condensing unit outside or on top). Most warm-box calls trace to a door or gasket, iced coils from a defrost fault, a dirty condenser, or a refrigerant leak. Start with the symptom guides below; anything involving refrigerant or wiring is a job for a licensed technician.

This guide covers walk-in coolers and walk-in freezers from every major manufacturer. It is organized the way problems arrive: first understand what you are seeing, then compare repair costs and options, then get it fixed. Every page tells you which checks are safe for staff and where to stop.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature should a walk-in cooler be?

Most operators run walk-in coolers at 35 to 38°F so food stays at or below the 41°F cold-holding limit. Freezers are commonly run at 0°F or colder.

Can an old R-404A walk-in still be repaired?

Yes. EPA's refrigerant limits apply to new systems; EPA states that components used to repair existing systems are not subject to them.

Who services walk-ins in the Bay Area?

Walk-in refrigeration work in California is done by C-38 licensed refrigeration contractors with EPA 608 certified technicians. Cool Aid holds a C-38 license and serves Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and San Francisco counties.
