Commercial Refrigeration Error Codes

Error, alarm and light codes explained

Home › Commercial Refrigeration Guide › Commercial Refrigeration Error Codes

Quick answer

Find the code your ice machine, walk-in or bar cooler is showing, what the manufacturer says it means, what you can safely check, and when to call a technician. Every code on these pages comes from the manufacturer's own manual or service bulletin, cited on the page.

How we built this library

Error-code lists online often disagree with each other. One site lists a Manitowoc long freeze at 35 minutes and another at 60; Scotsman's code 3 is described two different ways. So every code here was read in the manufacturer's own document, and each page names that document, its date and the models it covers.

When we could not find a code in an official manual, we left it out instead of guessing. Codes can change between board versions and model years, so always compare with the manual for your serial number.

Before you reset anything

  1. Write the code down, including the exact light pattern or beep count. Technicians use it to find the cause faster.
  2. Do the safe checks on the page: water supply, filter, condenser cleanliness, airflow, door and gasket, breaker.
  3. Reset once, using the method the manufacturer gives. If the same code returns, stop resetting. Most safety codes exist to protect the compressor, and repeated resets can turn a repair into a replacement.
  4. Protect the food or ice. Move product that must stay at 41°F or below and keep a temperature log.

Work on refrigerant circuits requires EPA Section 608 certification, and many units now use flammable R-290 refrigerant. Leave anything behind the panels to a licensed refrigeration contractor.

Brands not listed yet

We have not published pages for KE2 Therm, Dixell, Heatcraft IntelliGen, True, Turbo Air or Beverage-Air because we could not yet confirm their codes in an official manual. If your unit shows a code we do not cover, call us with the brand, model and the exact display, and our technicians will look it up in the manufacturer's service documents.

When to call a technician

Call when a code returns after one reset, when the unit shows a sensor or compressor safety code, or when food or ice safety is at risk.

Open 7 days, 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM. CA Lic. #776244.

Frequently asked questions

Are these error codes official?

Each code was taken from the manufacturer's own manual, training document or service bulletin, which is cited on the brand page. Codes we could not verify are left out.

Is it safe to keep resetting an error code?

Reset once using the manufacturer's method. If the code comes back, the protection is doing its job and the cause needs a technician.

My brand is not listed. What should I do?

Note the brand, model, serial number and exact code, check the manual that came with the unit, and call a licensed refrigeration technician.
