Home › Commercial Refrigeration Guide › Refrigeration Error Codes › Manitowoc Ice Machine Error Codes: E01 Long Freeze and E02 Long Harvest
Updated October 14, 2026
Quick answer
On Manitowoc Indigo NXT ice machines, E01 is a Long Freeze service fault (freeze cycle reached 35 minutes) and E02 is a Long Harvest service fault (harvest reached 7 minutes). After repeated long cycles the machine stops itself to protect the compressor. Restart it once from the On/Off button; if it stops again, the manual says to call for service.
Which machines this page covers
This page covers the Indigo NXT family: air-cooled, water-cooled, remote and QuietQube models. The codes and limits come from Manitowoc's own Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual for Indigo NXT, Part Number 040009662 Rev 01 (10/25), checked against the earlier Rev 09 (5/22) edition.
Older Manitowoc lines (the original Indigo, S-Series, NEO and QuietQube models built before Indigo NXT) use different boards and different limits. Do not apply the numbers below to them. If your machine has a touch display with icons, it is almost certainly an Indigo NXT.
Manitowoc Indigo NXT service fault codes
| Code | What it means (per the manual) | What the machine does | Owner checks before calling |
|---|---|---|---|
| E01 Long Freeze Cycle | The freeze cycle reached 35 minutes without the ice thickness probe calling for harvest. | Starts a harvest on its own. After repeated consecutive 35-minute freeze cycles, the machine stops (3 cycles in the 10/25 manual; 6 in the 5/22 edition). | Water supply valve open; water filter not clogged; condenser clean; air around the machine within the model's limits; machine due for de-scaling. |
| E02 Long Harvest Cycle | Harvest reached 7 minutes without the ice dropping. | Returns to the freeze cycle. After 3 consecutive long harvest cycles, the machine stops. | Ice slab not stuck behind a curtain or bin lid; machine due for de-scaling and sanitizing; incoming water not hot. |
The display also shows a green On/Off icon when the machine has shut off on a Long Freeze or Long Harvest fault. The manual limits restarts from that icon (or by cycling power) to three times in 24 hours.
What usually causes E01 (long freeze)
A long freeze means the evaporator is not building ice fast enough to reach the ice thickness probe within 35 minutes. Manitowoc's troubleshooting section points to a short list of causes:
- Scale and dirt. Mineral scale on the evaporator or a dirty ice thickness probe slows ice formation. De-scaling and sanitizing is the first fix in the manual.
- Not enough water. A shut water valve, a clogged water filter or a dirty inlet valve screen leaves the trough low.
- Heat around the machine. A dirty condenser, or hot air entering the condenser, cuts capacity. The manual gives a minimum and maximum air temperature for each model.
- Hot incoming water. The machine must be on a cold water line.
- Refrigeration faults. Low charge, a failing valve or a weak compressor. These need a certified technician.
If E01 keeps coming back after a cleaning, the cause is usually on the refrigeration side.
What usually causes E02 (long harvest)
In harvest, the machine warms the evaporator so the ice slab releases and drops. A 7-minute harvest means the slab is not letting go. Common reasons are heavy scale that bonds the ice to the plate, a harvest assist that is not pushing, or a refrigeration valve that is not opening. The manual lists "the harvest assist air compressor is not functioning" under low ice capacity and says to call for service.
How to restart after E01 or E02
Manitowoc's manual gives this procedure before you call:
- Press the On/Off button. The display reads Off. Press it again and the display reads Making Ice.
- If a service fault stopped the machine, it restarts after a short delay. If it does not restart at all, the problem is not the service fault: check power and the bin.
- Let the machine run. If it stops again, the condition has repeated: call for service. If it keeps running, the condition corrected itself.
Three restarts in 24 hours is the limit Manitowoc builds in. Past that, the fault needs a technician, not another restart.
Safe Operation Mode is not a fix
If the ice thickness probe or water level probe fails, an Indigo NXT can run in Safe Operation Mode for up to 72 hours and flashes an alert on the display. The machine keeps making ice on timed cycles, but output and ice quality suffer. Treat that alert as a service call, not a reason to wait.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if E01 or E02 returns after one restart, if it returns after a de-scale and sanitize, or if the display shows Safe Operation Mode. Refrigerant and electrical diagnosis must be done by an EPA-certified tech.

Frequently asked questions
How many times can I restart a Manitowoc after a long freeze?
The Indigo NXT manual allows restarting from the On/Off icon or by cycling power three times in one day. If the fault repeats, it needs service.
Why does my Manitowoc say E01 after cleaning?
Cleaning fixes scale-related long freezes. If E01 returns afterward, the usual causes are low water supply, heat around the condenser, or a refrigeration problem that a certified technician must diagnose.
Is the long freeze limit 35 or 60 minutes?
On Indigo NXT machines, Manitowoc's current manual sets it at 35 minutes. Older Manitowoc lines used different limits, so check the manual for your model.
Does Manitowoc have other error codes?
The owner's manual documents E01 and E02. Other codes in the service event log are covered in Manitowoc's technician handbook and are read by a service technician.
