Frequently asked questions
Who writes these lists?
Our own team at Cool Aid Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, a family HVAC and refrigeration contractor in Santa Clara since 1966. Every list that ranks companies says so in a disclosure box at the top.
Why is Cool Aid on the lists?
We serve every city and service these lists cover, so we include ourselves. The other companies are real, currently operating local businesses. Details about them come from their own websites and other public information, and can change, so confirm anything important with the company directly.
How do I check an HVAC contractor’s license in California?
Search the company name or license number on the Contractors State License Board’s license lookup. HVAC work needs a C-20 license, and refrigeration work a C-38. The lookup also shows bond, workers’ comp and any complaints.
Is there a guide to choosing a contractor rather than a list of names?
Yes. Choosing an HVAC Company in the Bay Area collects our articles on questions to ask, quotes, warranties and red flags.
