Scotsman Prodigy Ice Machine Error Codes

Error, alarm and light codes explained

Quick answer

On Scotsman Prodigy, Prodigy Plus and Prodigy ELITE cubers, number codes show why the machine shut down: 1 is maximum freeze time (45 minutes), 2 is maximum harvest time (3.5 minutes), 3 is slow water fill (5 minutes), 4 is discharge temperature over 250°F, 5 or 7 is a sensor failure, and 8 is a freeze cycle that ended too soon. A lowercase b means the bin is full.

Which machines this page covers

These codes come from Scotsman's own technical training document, Prodigy Elite and Prodigy Plus Cuber Technical Training, published on Scotsman's service site. It covers the Prodigy cuber controller used on Prodigy, Prodigy Plus and Prodigy ELITE modular cubers (the training covers models from C0322/C0330 up to C2648). Scotsman flakers and nugget machines use different controls.

The controller has a one-character code display. Letter codes show normal operating status. Number codes show the reason for a shutdown.

Scotsman Prodigy code table

CodeMeaningLimitWhat the controller does
1Maximum freeze time exceeded45 minutesCompletes a harvest and tries another cycle
2Maximum harvest time exceeded3.5 minutes (normal is 1 to 2 minutes)Shuts down, restarts after 50 minutes
3Water fill too slow5 minutesShuts down, tries to refill every 20 minutes
4Discharge temperature too highAbove 250°FImmediate shutdown
5 or 7Sensor (thermistor) failureOut of rangeCode 5 also shows when the thermistors are disconnected; operation can continue
8Freeze ended too soon (short freeze)Before 6 minutes into freezeCompletes a timed harvest and tries another cycle
bBin fullCurtain held open over 30 seconds, or bin level controlStops; restarts after the curtain switch closes again

For codes 1, 2 and 8 the controller retries twice. If the fault happens a third time, the machine must be reset by hand. After a water interruption it keeps retrying every 20 minutes. After a power failure it runs a 3-minute timed harvest before restarting.

Code 1: maximum freeze time

The freeze cycle passed 45 minutes. Scotsman's diagnostic process starts with the "recipe for ice": water, refrigeration and electrical. Before calling, check that the water supply is on, that filters are not clogged, and that the condenser and the air around the machine are not hot or blocked. Persistent code 1 is usually a refrigeration problem.

Code 2: maximum harvest time

Harvest normally takes one to two minutes; the limit is 3.5. Scotsman lists these causes: no ice because there was no water after a max freeze, the harvest assist not extending or retracting, the hot gas valve not opening, the curtain switch not sensing the curtain opening, poor ice formation, or low refrigerant charge.

Scotsman also documents a water-level sensor case that shows code 2: the Sump Full light is on but there is no water in the reservoir. The cause is a dirty sensor, and the fix is cleaning the sensor probes and housing.

Code 3: slow or no water fill

The reservoir did not fill within 5 minutes. Owner checks come straight from Scotsman's list: is the water supply shut off, and are the water filters plugged? Other causes are an inlet water valve failure, the controller not opening the inlet valve, or a leaking purge valve.

Code 4: high discharge temperature

The compressor discharge line reached 250°F and the machine shut down immediately. Causes include a fan motor failure, extremely high room temperature, a hot gas valve leaking through, or too much superheat. Check that nothing blocks the condenser airflow and that the room is not unusually hot. Then call a technician.

Codes 5 and 7: sensor failure

A temperature sensor (thermistor) reads out of range. A technician confirms it by measuring resistance against Scotsman's table. The machine can keep running without the thermistors, so you may still get ice while you wait for service.

Code 8: short freeze

The ice thickness sensor ended freeze in under 6 minutes. Scotsman names erratic water flow from the spillway as the primary cause; the spillway surface needs scrubbing. Other causes are an ice bridge set too thin, scale on the ice thickness sensor, and, on older units, a sagging water distributor bracket (changed in November 2012).

How to reset, recall and clear codes

  • Reset: push and release Off, then push and release On.
  • Recall past codes: push and hold Off to shut down, push and hold Off again until the display changes, then press Harvest to step through the last 10 codes, newest first.
  • Clear all codes: push and hold Off to shut down, then hold Clean and Harvest together for 3 seconds. Clear codes only after the problem is fixed, because the history helps the technician.

When to call a technician

Call a technician for code 4, for codes 5 or 7, and for any code 1, 2 or 8 that forces a manual reset (three failures). Code 3 that persists with water on and clean filters also needs service.

Open 7 days, 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM. CA Lic. #776244.

Frequently asked questions

What does code 1 mean on a Scotsman Prodigy?

The freeze cycle exceeded 45 minutes. The controller harvests and retries; after the third failure it needs a manual reset.

What does a lowercase b mean on a Scotsman?

It means bin full: the curtain stayed open for more than 30 seconds or the bin level control shut the machine off. It is a status, not a fault.

How do I see old error codes on a Scotsman Prodigy?

Hold Off to shut the machine down, hold Off again until the display changes, then press Harvest to cycle through the last 10 codes.

Will a Scotsman run with code 5?

Yes. Scotsman says operation can continue without the thermistors, and code 5 shows while they are disconnected. Schedule service to replace the sensor.
