Cool Aid holds factory authorization and factory training for Scotsman ice machines. The Scotsman CU machines rely on two sensors that sit in the water, an ice thickness sensor and a water sensor, and when scale coats them the machine makes less ice or stops. The three kinds of Scotsman maintenance

Scotsman's user manual for the CU1526, CU2026 and CU3030 says the machine needs three types of maintenance (Scotsman CU user manual):

1. Removing mineral scale from the water system and the sensors.
2. Sanitizing the water system and the ice storage bin.
3. Cleaning or replacing the air filter and cleaning the air-cooled condenser, on air-cooled models.

The manual puts the responsibility on the owner in one line: "Without human intervention, sanitation will not be maintained."

Scale on Scotsman sensors and the water distributor

During a cleaning, the manual has three parts come out and be washed in scale remover solution: the ice thickness sensor (its metal surfaces and adjustment screw), the water sensor, and the water distributor. It says to inspect the distributor for restricted orifice holes and make sure every hole is fully open (Scotsman CU user manual). Blocked holes mean water does not cover the freezing surface evenly, and a scaled sensor misreads the water or the ice. Both show up as slow or uneven production: see ice machine not making ice.

If a machine has gone a long time without descaling and scale remains after one pass, Scotsman says to repeat the cycle.

What the Scotsman display is telling you

On these models the display shows a letter for the machine's state (Scotsman CU user manual):

• b: the bin is full.
• C: the machine is in its Clean cycle, and the yellow Clean light blinks or stays on.
• O: the machine is off.

Scotsman cleaning and sanitizing schedule

Scotsman says to clean and sanitize the water system at least twice a year, and to sanitize the storage bin as often as local health codes require and every time the machine is cleaned (Scotsman CU user manual). In California the manufacturer's frequency is also the legal one (HSC 114117).

The cycle itself runs from the Clean button: 8 ounces of Scotsman Clear 1 scale remover in the reservoir, at least 10 minutes circulating, then at least 20 minutes of draining and refilling to purge it. Sanitizer follows, and the manual gives one possible mix as 1 ounce of household bleach in 2 gallons of warm water (95°F to 115°F), circulated for 10 minutes and flushed for at least 20. The scale remover is an acid that can burn skin, which is one reason many owners hand this to us. More in ice machine cleaning and sanitizing.

Scotsman air filter and condenser

The CU1526 and CU2026 have an air filter behind the left front grill, and the manual says to wash the dust and grease off it. A machine without a filter needs the condenser fins themselves cleaned. They sit behind the fan blades, and Scotsman recommends a refrigeration technician for that job (Scotsman CU user manual). In a kitchen, grease builds up on that filter and those fins quickly, and a blocked condenser makes less ice in hot weather.

Scotsman water filters

If the machine is on water filters, Scotsman says to check the date on the cartridges or the pressure on the gauge, and to change cartridges that have been in more than six months or when the pressure drops too much as the machine fills (Scotsman CU user manual). Replacing a Scotsman machine

We also replace machines that are no longer worth repairing. A new self-contained machine up to 1,000 pounds per day (batch) or 1,200 pounds per day (continuous) has had to use a refrigerant with a GWP under 150 since January 1, 2026 (40 CFR 84.54).
