A glass door merchandiser is a refrigerator and a sign at the same time. If the drinks are warm or the glass is fogged, customers walk past it. What we fix

Product not cold enough

Dirty condenser coils are the most common cause. Merchandisers often sit at the front of the store, pull in dust and have their grilles blocked by displays. Turbo Air calls for cleaning condenser coils at least every three months (Turbo Air). We also check evaporator fans, evaporator icing, overloaded shelves that block airflow, door closers and the thermostat.

Fogged or sweating glass

Glass fogs when its surface is colder than the dew point of the room. Door and frame heaters, gaskets that seal and doors that close fully keep it clear. A single fogged door usually points to a heater or gasket on that door. See display case problems for more on what causes it.

Lights, doors and hinges

Failed LED lighting, sagging doors, torn gaskets and door closers that no longer pull the door shut. A door that hangs open warms the whole case.

Newer merchandisers and R-290

New self-contained commercial refrigeration units have been limited to refrigerants with a GWP under 150 since January 1, 2025 (40 CFR 84.54), and many new merchandisers use R-290. EPA allows R-290 charges of up to 304 g in units with doors, and requires marked service ports and red hoses or piping on flammable-refrigerant equipment (EPA). These units need technicians trained to work on them and OEM replacement parts.

Replacing a merchandiser

If the unit is old and failing, ENERGY STAR certified commercial refrigerators average about 20 percent better efficiency than standard models (ENERGY STAR), and the California Foodservice Instant Rebates program lists glass or solid door refrigerators at $50 to $100 per unit, taken off the invoice at participating dealers, while funds last (program flyer). Where merchandisers fit
