Home › Commercial Refrigeration Guide › Reach-In & Prep Refrigeration Guide › Commercial Refrigerator Repair Cost: What Drives the Price
Updated October 14, 2026
Quick answer
The price of a reach-in repair depends mostly on which part failed and whether the sealed refrigerant system has to be opened. Fans, gaskets, controllers and thermostats are the low end. Compressors, refrigerant leaks and evaporator coils are the high end, because they need recovery, brazing and recharge. Ask for the diagnosis and the part named before you approve.
Repairs from least to most involved
| Repair | Sealed system opened? | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Door gasket | No | Low |
| Thermostat or temperature probe | No | Low |
| Evaporator or condenser fan motor | No | Low to moderate |
| Electronic controller | No | Moderate |
| Start relay, overload, capacitor | No | Low to moderate |
| Defrost heater or timer | No | Moderate |
| Refrigerant leak repair and recharge | Yes | High |
| Compressor replacement | Yes | High |
| Evaporator or condenser coil | Yes | High |
What else moves the price
- After-hours and weekend calls usually cost more.
- Parts availability. Common brands such as True and Traulsen have parts in local supply houses; imports may need shipping.
- Warranty. Many manufacturers cover compressors longer than other parts. Check the serial plate and your paperwork before paying for a compressor.
- Refrigerant type. R-290 sealed-system work follows stricter procedures (see R-290 units).
Cheapest repair of all
Most emergency calls we see start with a dirty condenser coil or a torn gasket. Cleaning the coil every one to three months costs nothing but a brush and a vacuum, and it protects the compressor, the most expensive part in the unit.
Questions to ask before approving
- What failed, and how did you confirm it?
- Is the part under the manufacturer's warranty?
- Is the sealed system being opened?
- How old is the unit, and would you put this money into it? (See repair vs replace.)
- What does your warranty on the repair cover? Ours is one year on parts and labor.
How to keep repair bills down
- Clean condenser coils on schedule; it protects the compressor.
- Replace torn gaskets early; a leaking door makes everything work harder.
- Keep units on dedicated circuits at the correct voltage.
- Do not overload or block airflow.
- Call at the first sign of trouble. A noisy fan is a small repair; a compressor running against a dead fan for weeks is a big one.
- Keep invoices so you can see the repair history at replace-or-repair time.
Why diagnosis matters
Two units with the same symptom can need very different repairs. A warm cabinet can be a $20 coil cleaning's worth of work or a compressor. Approve the repair after the technician has confirmed the fault, not on a guess, and ask what readings confirmed it.
After-hours calls
Our regular hours are 8 AM to 5 PM with emergency service until 9 PM. Calls in the morning are easiest to fit in and finish the same day.
Owner checks before you pay for a call
| Step | Check | What the finding means for cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Power, breaker, set point | Fixes some calls at no cost |
| 2 | Condenser coil | A dirty coil is the cheapest fix |
| 3 | Gasket | Low-cost part |
| 4 | Fan running? | Fan motor: low to moderate |
| 5 | Ice on the coil? | Defrost part: moderate |
| 6 | Compressor clicking? | Start parts or compressor: moderate to high |
Warranty can change the math
Many brands cover the compressor longer than other parts. Published terms we have seen range from 5 years (Atosa, Avantco, Migali) to 7 years (Traulsen, Turbo Air, Beverage-Air and Delfield models), and Traulsen units invoiced since 2023 carry 6 years of parts and labor. Check the serial before paying for a compressor. See our brand guides: True, Traulsen, Atosa.
Bay Area factors
Bay Area labor costs are higher than national averages, so national price guides understate local repair prices. Parts for common brands are stocked at local supply houses; less common imports may add a day or more. Calls after hours cost more everywhere.
How a typical repair visit goes
- Diagnosis: temperatures, condenser, fans, defrost, electrical, and the sealed system if needed.
- Quote: the part, labor and whether the sealed system is opened.
- Repair: same day if the part is on the truck or at a local supply house.
- Check-out: the unit is run and temperatures confirmed.
Cost of not repairing
A reach-in that runs warm costs more than its repair bill: discarded food, menu items taken off during service, and possible inspection findings. A compressor that labors against a dirty coil or dead fan for weeks often fails, turning a modest repair into the most expensive one.
When to call a technician
If the diagnosis involves the compressor, a refrigerant leak or a coil on a unit over about ten years old, ask for a repair-versus-replace comparison before approving.
Open 7 days, 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM. CA Lic. #776244.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing a commercial refrigerator?
Usually yes for fans, gaskets, controllers and electrical parts. Sealed-system repairs on old units deserve a replacement quote alongside.
Why do compressor repairs cost so much?
The refrigerant has to be recovered, the old compressor cut out, the new one brazed in, the system evacuated and recharged, and the part itself is expensive.
Does the manufacturer warranty cover compressors?
Many brands cover the compressor for longer than other parts. Check the warranty card or the manufacturer's website with your serial number.
Do you charge to diagnose?
Ask when you book; diagnosis is part of every visit and we confirm the fault before quoting the repair.
Why are Bay Area repair prices higher than online guides say?
Most online guides use national averages; Bay Area labor and travel costs are higher.
Is a gasket repair worth a service call?
Often you can order and press in a gasket yourself; a technician helps when the door or hinge also needs adjustment.
Is preventive maintenance cheaper than repairs?
Usually; coil cleaning and early fan replacement prevent most compressor failures.
Do you quote before starting?
Yes; you get the diagnosis and price before work begins.
