Most ice machine problems we fix go back to how the machine was installed: too small for the business, stuck in a hot room, a drain that cannot drain, or no filtration. Repair or replace?

Age, repair history, ice demand and refrigerant all matter. A machine that is too small will never keep up no matter how often it is repaired. Our repair or replace guide covers the decision for refrigeration in general.

What we plan

• Size and ice type. Your peak-day ice use, bin size and the cube type your drinks and food need.
• Location and air. Air-cooled machines need cool air around them. Manitowoc's range for its self-contained air-cooled models is 40°F to 110°F (Manitowoc). In a hot room, a remote condenser or a different location may be the answer.
• Drains. Ice machines must drain through an air gap into a floor sink (HSC 114193), and waste lines may not pass through the machine or bin (HSC 114171).
• Water and filtration. A dedicated supply with a shutoff and a filter system. See ice machine water filters.
• Power. The right circuit for the machine.

Refrigerant rules for new ice machines

From January 1, 2026, new self-contained ice machines up to 1,000 pounds per day (batch type) or 1,200 pounds per day (continuous type) must use refrigerants with a GWP under 150. Larger batch machines and remote-condenser machines face bans on listed refrigerants such as R-404A from January 1, 2027 (40 CFR 84.54). Many new machines use R-290, which requires trained technicians and marked equipment (EPA). Existing machines can keep running and be serviced; this affects what you buy new.

Efficiency and rebates

• ENERGY STAR certified batch-type ice makers are about 10 percent more energy efficient and 20 percent more water efficient than standard models (ENERGY STAR).
• The California Foodservice Instant Rebates program lists ice machines at $75 to $500 per unit, depending on harvest rate, taken off the invoice at participating dealers while funds last (program flyer). Check eligibility on the program site (California Foodservice Instant Rebates).

Installation steps

1. Site visit: ice demand, location, water, drain and power.
2. Removal of the old machine, with refrigerant recovered by EPA certified technicians.
3. Set the machine and bin, connect water, filtration, drain and power.
4. Start-up to the manufacturer's procedure, first cleaning and sanitizing, and a check of production and harvest.
5. A cleaning and filter schedule for your staff and our maintenance visits.
