Quick answer
A walk-in has two brands: the box maker (Kolpak, Norlake, Amerikooler and others) and the refrigeration system maker (Heatcraft, Copeland, Russell, KeepRite and others), which are often different. 1-800-Cool-Aid services both sides of every major brand, plus older and unbranded boxes. Find both data plates before you call; it speeds up parts and diagnosis.

How to identify your walk-in
- Find the box data plate: usually on the door frame, the inside of the door, or a wall near the door.
- Find the refrigeration data plate on the condensing unit or self-contained package (roof, top of box or mechanical room).
- Find the evaporator plate inside, on the unit cooler housing (look, do not open covers).
- Note the controller brand on the display.
- Photograph all of them and send them when you book service.
Why the brand matters
- Door hardware, gaskets and heater wire differ by maker and era.
- Self-contained packages are brand-specific; remote systems are more interchangeable.
- Controllers show different alarm codes. See our error code library.
- Some manufacturers offer long panel or compressor warranties; check before paying for a major repair.
Unbranded and older boxes
Older boxes, site-built rooms and boxes from defunct makers can still be repaired. Universal door hardware and cut-to-fit gaskets solve most door issues, panels can be patched or replaced with compatible ones, and any properly sized refrigeration system can serve the box. We service these brands; we work on it independently, and manufacturer warranty claims go through each manufacturer's own process.
Box brand vs system brand: who to call for what
| Problem | Usually involves |
|---|---|
| Door, gasket, hinge, closer, inside release | Box maker's parts |
| Panels sweating, damaged, wet | Box maker's panels |
| Box warm, coil iced, fans stopped | Refrigeration system parts |
| Compressor or condensing unit failure | Refrigeration system or compressor maker |
| Controller alarm | Controller maker (may be box or system brand) |
A refrigeration contractor handles both sides, so you do not need separate companies. Knowing which side the problem sits on helps us bring the right parts.
Older and discontinued brands
Walk-ins last a long time, so we regularly find boxes from makers that have merged, renamed or closed. Common examples are older ThermalRite, CrownTonka and ICS boxes now supported by Everidge, and Artic Temp boxes that Imperial Brown acquired. For boxes whose maker no longer exists, universal hinges, closers and latches fit many doors, gaskets can be cut to fit, and the refrigeration side uses standard components from Heatcraft, Copeland, Russell and others. A box is almost never scrap just because its brand is gone; what matters is whether the panels are dry and the doors can be made to seal.
If you are not sure what you have, send us photos of any labels, the door hardware and the refrigeration units. That is usually enough to identify the equipment and plan the repair.
Bay Area note
Bay Area kitchens and stores run every major brand, often mixed: a Kolpak box with a Heatcraft system, an Amerikooler box with a Copeland condensing unit, or an old Norlake box with a newer replacement system. We plan repairs around both sides.
