Norlake Walk-In Coolers and Freezers: Service Guide

Walk-in coolers and freezers

Home › Commercial Refrigeration Guide › Walk-In Cooler & Freezer Guide › Norlake Walk-In Coolers and Freezers: Service Guide

Updated October 14, 2026

Quick answer

Norlake makes walk-in boxes (Kold Locker quick-ship, Fast-Trak semi-custom and Fineline custom), its own refrigeration systems (Capsule Pak self-contained and Split-Pak remote, including R-449A and A2L versions), and LogiTemp Plus controllers with reverse-cycle defrost. Because box, system and controls are designed to work together, knowing the controller is often the key to a fast repair.

Fast-TrakSemi-custom walk-ins
FinelineFully custom walk-ins

Split-Pak RemoteRemote systems, including R-449A and A2L refrigerant versions
LogiTemp PlusElectronic controller with reverse-cycle defrost; LogiTemp Remote Connection for monitoring

Norlake's site says LogiTemp controllers come standard on many systems, including Capsule Pak models, and lists Master-Bilt and Norlake Scientific as sister brands. Its walk-in panels use polyurethane insulation; Norlake rates its 4-inch panel at R-32 and its 5-inch at R-40.

What reverse-cycle defrost means for service

Most small freezers defrost with electric heaters. Reverse-cycle defrost instead sends warm refrigerant back through the evaporator to melt frost, similar in principle to hot-gas defrost. It can defrost faster and use less heater energy, but it adds valves and control logic. A technician who knows the platform checks the reversing components and the LogiTemp settings when a freezer ices up, rather than looking only for a burned heater. See walk-in defrost explained.

Refrigerants on newer Norlake systems

Norlake now lists remote systems with R-449A and with A2L refrigerants, which are mildly flammable lower-GWP options used to meet EPA limits for new equipment. A2L systems have their own installation and service rules, so make sure your technician is trained on them. Older Norlake systems on R-404A can still be repaired. See R-404A retrofit or replace and our 2026 rules page.

Common Norlake service calls

  • LogiTemp alarms after a power outage or probe fault; write down the code and see our error code library.
  • Capsule Pak packages in hot rooms running long.
  • Freezer icing tied to defrost settings or reversing components.
  • Door gaskets and closers on high-traffic boxes.
  • Panel joint sweating on older boxes moved or reconfigured.

Identifying your Norlake

Look for the data plate on the door frame for the box, and on the refrigeration package or condensing unit for the system. Note the controller model shown on the display. Norlake has made walk-ins for decades, so older boxes may have different door hardware from current lines; serial numbers let us match parts.

Repair or replace

A sound Norlake box is usually worth keeping. If a Capsule Pak or Split-Pak fails on an older system, compare repair with a new package matched to current refrigerant rules. See repair or replace. We service this brand; we work on it independently, and manufacturer warranty claims go through the manufacturer's own process.

Norlake service in the Bay Area

We service Norlake boxes, Capsule Pak and Split-Pak systems and LogiTemp controls across the South Bay, Peninsula, East Bay and San Francisco.

Norlake owner checks

  1. Write down the LogiTemp code or message.
  2. Confirm the temperature with a separate thermometer.
  3. Check the door seals and closes.
  4. Check evaporator fans and look for ice.
  5. For Capsule Pak units, check the room around the unit is not hot or blocked.

Bay Area note

Self-contained Capsule Pak units in small back rooms run hottest in inland summer weather. If yours struggles on hot afternoons, improving ventilation or moving to a remote system can help more than repeated repairs.

Older Norlake boxes

Norlake has built walk-ins for decades, so Bay Area kitchens and stores still run boxes installed long ago, often with replacement refrigeration from other makers. Door hardware and gaskets on older boxes may differ from current designs; the box serial number lets a technician find the right parts or a compatible substitute. If the box is sound, replacing an old system with a current Capsule Pak or Split-Pak, or another properly sized system, can give the box many more years.

What the technician checks

  • LogiTemp settings, alarms and probe readings.
  • Reverse-cycle defrost operation on freezers.
  • Refrigerant pressures and superheat.
  • Door seals, closers and heaters.
  • Condenser cleanliness and airflow.

Owner prep

Keep a record of your LogiTemp settings and any codes seen over time; repeat codes point to the real fault.

Owner records

Keep LogiTemp settings, codes seen and service reports together; patterns point to the real fault.
