Quick answer
Manitowoc makes cube machines (including the Indigo NXT and NEO lines) and flake and nugget machines. Most Manitowoc problems trace to scale, a dirty condenser, water supply and sensors. The Indigo NXT's touch display logs faults, and the optional LuminIce II uses UV light to slow microbial growth in the food zone.
Manitowoc lines you may have
- Indigo NXT. Modular cubers with an icon-based touch display that shows service menus, reminders and alerts. The front door and front-facing evaporator give access to the food zone without removing top or side panels.
- NEO. Undercounter and smaller cubers.
- LuminIce II. An optional built-in UV device meant to reduce microbial growth in the food zone. It helps between cleanings; it does not replace them.
Manitowoc symptoms and where to start
| Symptom on a Manitowoc | Start here | More detail |
|---|---|---|
| Indigo NXT shows an alert and no ice | Read the alert on the touch display and the event log | Manitowoc codes |
| Dice cubes thin or partly formed | Water filter and distribution tube | cube quality |
| Sheet hangs on the evaporator | Scale on the front-facing evaporator | harvest problems |
| NEO under a bar running hot | Front grille clearance | undercounter units |
Owner checks, in order
- Read the display. On Indigo NXT, the touch display shows alerts and service menus; note any alert and the event log entry before resetting.
- Mode. Confirm the machine is in ice-making mode, not clean or off.
- Water. Supply valve open, filter in date, no kinks.
- Air. Clean the condenser grille and confirm clearance around vents.
- Bin. Check the bin level control area is free of ice jams and debris.
- Look at the food zone. Indigo NXT's front door opens to the evaporator; white crust means scale, colored film means biofilm.
What the findings mean
| Finding | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Long freeze or long harvest alert | Scale, low water, condenser airflow, or refrigeration | Clean and descale; call if it returns |
| White crust on evaporator and trough | Scale | Descale with Manitowoc cleaner |
| Pink or black film | Biofilm | Full clean and sanitize; consider LuminIce |
| Hot air at vents, output drops in afternoons | Heat rejection | Clean condenser; improve ventilation |
| Bin overfills or machine stops early | Bin level control | Clean sensor area; technician test |
Manitowoc cleaning schedule
Manitowoc's maintenance instructions: descale and sanitize every six months for efficient operation; for more frequent needs, have a qualified service company test the water and recommend treatment. Only Manitowoc Ice Machine Cleaner/Descaler and Sanitizer are approved. Indigo NXT's hinged front door and front-facing evaporator make the food zone easier to reach without removing top or side panels. Maintenance procedures are not covered by the warranty, so the cost of cleaning is the owner's.
NEO and undercounter tips
NEO undercounter machines live in tight spaces under bars and counters. Keep the front grille clear, check the drain (and drain pump if fitted), and expect slime sooner in bars with beer and sugar in the air. See undercounter ice machines.
Repairs we handle on Manitowoc machines
| Part or system | Typical symptom |
|---|---|
| Water inlet valve, pump, distribution tube | Thin or partial cubes; slow fill |
| Ice thickness probe and bin level control | Early or late harvest; overfill or early stop |
| Condenser fan motor | Hot vents; afternoon slowdowns |
| Harvest components and hot gas valve | Ice stuck to the evaporator |
| Control board and display | Alerts that do not clear; blank display |
| Refrigerant leaks, evaporator, compressor | Long freeze faults; partial frost; no ice |
Seasonal pattern
Slow-ice problems tend to peak in late summer and early fall: warm kitchens, warmer incoming water and condensers loaded with a season of grease. A condenser clean and descale before the warm months prevents many of them.
Hard water by area
Hardness varies widely: SFPUC water averaged 62 mg/L in 2025, EBMUD plants sampled 16–64 mg/L in October 2026, while Zone 7 groundwater averaged 318 mg/L. On harder water, descale more often than six months. See hard water by area.
Cleaning and descaling
Manitowoc's maintenance instructions call for descaling and sanitizing every six months, more often in hard water, and name Manitowoc's own cleaner/descaler and sanitizer as the only approved products. Do not substitute generic acids. See choosing a cleaner.
Repair
For Manitowoc repairs, see our Manitowoc ice machine repair page.
Need a Manitowoc technician? Our EPA-certified team works on Indigo NXT and NEO machines throughout the Bay Area.
Before you call
Take a photo of the Indigo NXT alert screen and the matching event log entry, note the model and serial number from the data plate, and write down when the machine was last descaled. On NEO undercounter units, note whether the front grille was blocked. These details often let the technician arrive with the likely part.
When to call a technician
If a Manitowoc machine shows the same fault after one reset, or makes ice slowly after the condenser and filter are sorted, call a technician. Refrigeration repairs need an EPA-certified tech.
Open 7 days, 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM. CA Lic. #776244.
Frequently asked questions
Does Manitowoc require its own cleaner?
Manitowoc's maintenance instructions name its own cleaner/descaler and sanitizer as the only approved products.
What is LuminIce?
An optional UV device that slows microbial growth in the food zone between cleanings.
Can I clean a Manitowoc myself?
You can run the clean cycle per the manual. A full clean with panels off is better done by a trained technician.
Do you repair Manitowoc ice machines in the Bay Area?
Yes. Our C-38 technicians service Manitowoc machines in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and San Francisco counties.
Why does my Indigo NXT show a long freeze alert?
The freeze took longer than the control allows: often scale, low water flow or a dirty condenser, sometimes refrigeration. Clean and descale; call if it returns.
Can LuminIce replace cleaning?
No. It slows microbial growth between cleanings; Manitowoc's six-month descale and sanitize still applies.
