Quick answer

Scotsman makes Prodigy and Prodigy ELITE cube machines and nugget and flake machines. Prodigy controls report problems with indicator lights and codes. Most issues come back to scale, a dirty condenser, water supply and sensors.

Scotsman lines you may have

  • Prodigy and Prodigy ELITE. Modular cubers whose controls show status and fault indicators. See Scotsman codes.
  • Nugget and flake. Auger machines; see flakers.

Owner checks, in order

  1. Read the indicators. Prodigy controls show status and fault lights or codes; note them before any reset. See Scotsman codes.
  2. Water. Valve open, filter in date. Prodigy controls can flag slow water fill.
  3. Condenser. Clean the grille; Scotsman's maintenance aids include cleaning the air filter on a regular schedule.
  4. Bin. Check the ice level sensing is unobstructed.
  5. Food zone. Look for scale and slime on the evaporator, water trough and curtain.

Scotsman cleaning schedule

Scotsman's service bulletin PS-2-2020 says to sanitize the machine at least every six months and recommends more frequent sanitation to reduce the risk of transmitting bacteria and virus-related illness. Scotsman's Prodigy maintenance aids list storage bin cleaning and sanitizing, scale removal and air filter cleaning at six-month intervals, and note the bin sanitizing takes about 25 minutes. Use Scotsman's approved cleaner and sanitizer and follow the user manual for your model.

What our technician does on a Scotsman call

We read the stored indicators, time a full cycle against the spec, check water fill and sensors, inspect the evaporator and water system for scale and biofilm, clean the condenser and air filter, and check refrigeration if the cycle is off. You get the cause, fix and cost before work starts.

Cleaning and descaling

Use Scotsman-approved cleaner and sanitizer and follow the model manual's interval and steps, shortening it in hard water. See choosing a cleaner.

Repair

For Scotsman repairs, see our Scotsman ice machine repair page.

For Prodigy and nugget machine repairs, our C-38 licensed team covers the Bay Area with a 1-year parts and labor warranty.

Nugget machines in bars and healthcare

Scotsman nugget machines are common in soda programs and healthcare. They concentrate minerals on the auger, so on hard water they need descaling sooner than cubers, and their dispense chutes need regular cleaning to stay free of slime. A squeal or soft nuggets is the early warning. See flaker machines and slime and mold.

Before you call

Have the model and serial number from the data plate, the indicator pattern, when it was last cleaned and when the filter was changed. That shortens diagnosis and helps us bring the right parts. See Scotsman ice machine repair to book.

Prodigy vs Prodigy ELITE

Both are modular cubers with fault-reporting controls. ELITE models add features over the base Prodigy line; the procedures in your model's manual, not the family name, decide how to clean and reset it.

Hard water and Prodigy machines

Scale is the most common root cause behind Prodigy long-freeze and long-harvest indications. Scotsman lists scale removal on its six-month maintenance list, but machines on hard groundwater often need it sooner.

Before you call

Note whether the Prodigy indicator is steady or flashing and how often, the model and serial number from the data plate, and the last cleaning date. For nugget machines, say whether squealing came before the fault. This helps the technician bring the likely part on the first visit.

When to call a technician

If a Scotsman machine shows the same fault after one reset, or makes ice slowly after the condenser and filter are sorted, call a technician. Refrigeration repairs need an EPA-certified tech.

Frequently asked questions

Why are lights flashing on my Scotsman?

The control is reporting a status or fault. Note the pattern and look it up before resetting.

Do Scotsman nugget machines need descaling?

Yes. Auger machines are especially sensitive to scale.

Can I clean a Scotsman myself?

You can run the clean cycle per the manual. A full clean with panels off is better done by a trained technician.

Do you repair Scotsman ice machines in the Bay Area?

Yes. Our C-38 technicians service Scotsman machines in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and San Francisco counties.

How often should a Scotsman be sanitized?

Scotsman recommends at least every six months, and more often to reduce the risk of illness.

How long does sanitizing a Scotsman bin take?

Scotsman's maintenance aid lists about 25 minutes for bin sanitizing.
