Gas Smell First: Safety Before Repair

A furnace that runs but produces a burning-dust smell on the first cold night of the season is usually just burning off dust from the heat exchanger. A smell of rotten eggs, a sooty burner, or a carbon monoxide alarm is different and should never be ignored.

Common Furnace Problems in Campbell Homes

Campbell's postwar ranch homes typically have a forced-air gas furnace in a hall closet, garage, or attic, feeding ducts that run through the attic. Many of these furnaces sit idle for most of the year, then run hard for a few months, and the failures reflect that pattern.

• Ignition failures. Hot surface igniters crack and flame sensors get coated, so the burners light and then shut down after a few seconds. This is the single most common no-heat call.
• Blower and motor problems. Worn bearings, failed capacitors, or a motor that overheats will stop airflow even when the burners are fine.
• Tripped safety switches. A clogged filter or restricted return air can overheat the furnace and trip the high-limit switch, so the system cycles off before the house warms up.
• Venting and draft issues. Older attic furnaces can have flue pipes that have shifted or corroded. We check venting on every call because it is a safety item, not a comfort one.
• Thermostat and wiring. Loose connections and aging thermostats cause short cycling or a furnace that will not respond at all.

What We Check on a Furnace Repair Call

Combustion and safety

We inspect the burners, flame quality, and venting, and look at the heat exchanger for cracks or signs of overheating. If we find a condition that is unsafe to operate, we explain it and shut the unit down rather than leave it running.

Ignition and controls

We test the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve, pressure switch, and control board in sequence, so we replace the part that actually failed rather than guessing.

Airflow

We check the filter, blower, and return air path, and look at the attic duct connections that serve the rooms you say are cold. In single-story Campbell homes, a disconnected attic duct often explains the one bedroom that never warms up.

When Repair Turns Into Replacement

An older furnace with a cracked heat exchanger or a failed control board and inducer at the same time may not be worth repairing. If that is where things land, you have two paths: a new gas furnace, or an electric heat pump that handles both heating and cooling.

Silicon Valley Clean Energy rebate

Campbell is in Silicon Valley Clean Energy's service area. SVCE, which supplies electricity in the city while PG&E delivers it, offers a $2,000 rebate when a heat pump replaces a gas furnace ($3,000 for income-qualified households), and you must apply before the installation (source). The federal 25C credit ended for equipment placed in service after 31 December 2025, so do not count on it.

City of Campbell permits

Furnace installations and replacements in Campbell must be done by a licensed mechanical (C-20) contractor or an owner-builder, with the permit issued through the city's online system (source).
