Central AC or Heat Pump?

Both systems use the same basic parts: an outdoor unit, an indoor coil, and ductwork. The difference is that a heat pump can reverse to provide heat, so it can take over from a gas furnace.

Central air conditioner

A new central AC pairs with your existing furnace. It makes sense if your furnace is relatively new and in good condition, and you only need to replace the cooling side. Current equipment uses lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-32 and R-454B, which our technicians are trained to handle.

Electric heat pump

A heat pump replaces both the AC and the gas furnace with one electric system. The SVCE Rebate for Campbell Homes

In Campbell, Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) supplies your electricity and PG&E delivers it; PG&E also supplies gas. Campbell is in SVCE's service area, and SVCE offers a heat pump HVAC rebate (source):

• $2,000 when a heat pump replaces a gas furnace
• $3,000 for income-qualified households replacing a gas furnace
• $500 when a heat pump replaces electric resistance heating

The federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment placed in service after 31 December 2025, so it no longer applies to new installations.

Permits in Campbell

The City of Campbell limits HVAC and furnace installations and replacements to licensed mechanical (C-20) contractors or owner-builders, and permits are issued through the city's online system (source). An unpermitted replacement can cause problems when you sell the house, so it is worth doing correctly.

What Campbell Homes Need to Consider

Many Campbell houses are postwar single-story ranch homes, and that layout shapes an installation.

• Attic ductwork. Ducts in a ranch-home attic are often original or were added when central air arrived. We inspect them before sizing equipment, because a new system on leaky ducts will not perform as rated.
• Equipment sizing. Cooling was often added to a furnace sized for heating only. We size the new system with a load calculation rather than matching the old unit's tonnage.
• Outdoor unit placement. Side yards in Campbell are often narrow. We plan clearances for airflow and service access, and keep noise in mind near bedroom windows and neighbors.

2. Rebate and permit

If you choose a heat pump, the SVCE application goes in first. We then file the permit through Campbell's online system.

3. Installation and startup

We remove the old equipment, recover refrigerant as EPA rules require, install the new system, and commission it with measured refrigerant charge and airflow.

4. Inspection and warranty

We coordinate the city inspection and any HERS verification. Every job carries our 1-year parts and labor warranty on top of the manufacturer's equipment warranty.
