Glass Door Merchandiser Problems and Fixes

Reach-ins, prep tables and merchandisers

Updated October 14, 2026

Quick answer

Glass-door merchandisers fail in four common ways: fogging or sweating glass, warm product, doors that do not close, and failed lighting. Fogging and sweating usually trace to a door heater or humid air. Warm product is usually a dirty condenser or overloading in front of the air outlet. Self-closing doors that stop closing let both problems get worse.

Loading for cold product

Merchandisers are display units. Packing them so cans touch the back wall blocks the cold air curtain. Keep product behind the load line and do not stack cases on top of the unit's top grille if the condenser breathes there.

Beer caves and walk-in glass doors

The same door heater and closer issues appear on walk-in glass doors and beer caves. See beer cave problems.

Humidity and placement

Stores with automatic entry doors, warm sunny windows or no air conditioning push merchandisers hard. Units near entrances see bursts of humid air every time the door opens, which fogs glass and adds frost. If one unit in a row fogs and others do not, check its heaters; if all of them fog on humid days, the store air is the main cause.

Lighting

LED lighting in merchandisers runs on drivers that fail more often than the LEDs themselves. If one section is dark and others are lit, the driver or a connector in the door mullion is the usual cause. Turn off power before opening any light cover.

Doors and closers

  • Hinge cams and closers wear with customer traffic.
  • A unit that is not level can stop doors from self-closing.
  • Doors held open by product stop the seal and fog the glass.

What the technician checks

  1. Door and frame heater circuits
  2. Gaskets and closers
  3. Condenser, fans and refrigerant circuit
  4. Controller settings, including heater control
  5. LED drivers and wiring

Bay Area factors

Stores near the coast and in San Francisco fight humidity; South Bay and East Bay stores fight summer heat and afternoon sun on front windows. Both push merchandisers hardest near the entrance.

Who owns the cooler?

Many beverage merchandisers in stores are owned and serviced by a beverage distributor. Check the label on the unit. If you own it, we can repair it.

Energy and lighting

Merchandisers run lights and often door heaters continuously. LED lighting and heater controls reduce operating cost; ENERGY STAR lists certified glass-door models.

What our technician does

  1. Checks product temperatures front and back.
  2. Tests door and frame heaters.
  3. Inspects closers and gaskets.
  4. Checks the condenser, fans and refrigeration.
  5. Checks LED drivers.

Regular hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM.

Why fogging is more than cosmetic

Fogged doors hide product from customers and lose sales. Water running down the door frame can rust hinges and frames and drip onto the floor. Persistent sweating also means the door heater or seal has failed, which lets humid air in and adds frost inside, so the cooler works harder and runs warmer.

Store layout tips

Keep merchandisers out of direct afternoon sun where you can, away from heaters and fryers, and not directly beside automatic entry doors. Leave space above and behind for airflow if the condenser breathes there. In small stores where none of this is possible, plan for more frequent coil cleaning and heater checks.

When to call a technician

Call if glass keeps sweating with heaters on, if product stays above set point after cleaning the coil, or if doors will not self-close.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my beverage cooler glass fogging?

The outer glass is below the dew point of the room. The door heater may be off or failed, or the store air is very humid.

Can fog between the glass panes be fixed?

Not by cleaning. The sealed glass unit has failed and the glass or door needs replacing.

Why are drinks at the front of my cooler warm?

Overloading or a dirty condenser. Drinks at the front are furthest from the cold air outlet.

Do merchandiser door heaters run all the time?

On many units they do, or they are controlled by a humidity or energy-saving control. Check your model.

Why do my merchandiser doors sweat only in summer?

Higher humidity and warmer store air push the glass below the dew point.

How cold should a beverage merchandiser be?

Most stores run them in the mid-30s °F so drinks are cold when sold.

Can I turn off door heaters to save energy?

Usually not without fogging and frost; use the heater control the unit provides.

Do you repair glass-door freezers too?

Yes; freezers add frame heaters and defrost to the list, but the checks are similar.

Why are my merchandiser lights flickering?

Usually a failing LED driver or loose connector.

Should merchandiser doors be left open while stocking?

No; stock in batches and close doors between them to limit fog and frost.
