Quick answer
Cool Aid's ice machine cleaning service is a scheduled, professional clean, descale and sanitize done to the manufacturer's procedure, with panels off and food-zone parts removed. You get a machine that makes clear ice at full speed, a bin and chute free of slime, and a dated record you can show a health inspector. For how cleaning works in general, see our ice machine cleaning and sanitizing guide.
What a full service includes
Every visit follows the manufacturer's written procedure for your model. For background on what cleaning does, see ice machine cleaning and sanitizing.
- Empty and discard ice; shut off and protect the bin.
- Run the descale cycle with the manufacturer-approved cleaner.
- Remove and hand-clean the water trough, distribution tube, curtain, probes and sensors, per the manual.
- Sanitize all food-zone parts, the bin or dispenser, chute and door.
- Clean the air-cooled condenser coil and check the fan.
- Check or change the water filter cartridge.
- Inspect for leaks, worn parts and refrigeration warning signs.
- Restart, check cycle times and ice quality, and record the service for your log.
Why not just run the clean cycle?
The built-in cycle circulates cleaner through the water system, but it does not reach the curtain hinges, sensor lenses, chute or bin walls where slime grows, or the condenser coil that drives slow production. See slime and mold and slow production.
Frequency by business type
| Business | Recommended service | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant on soft water | Every 6 months (manufacturer minimum) | Meets most manufacturers' intervals |
| Restaurant on hard water | Every 3–4 months | Scale builds faster |
| Bar, brewery, bakery, pizza | Every 3–4 months | Airborne yeast and sugar feed slime |
| Coffee and smoothie shops | Every 3–4 months | Sugar and dairy aerosols |
| Hotel | Every 6 months, plus guest-floor dispenser checks | Many machines, uneven use |
| Hospital and care home | Per facility policy; often quarterly | Nugget machines scale fast; dispensers stay damp |
Manufacturer minimums: Manitowoc every six months; Scotsman sanitizing at least every six months; Ice-O-Matic at least every six months and no more than monthly; Follett semi-annually with weekly drain and monthly air-cooled condenser care. Shorter schedules are our practical guidance based on water and environment.
Health inspection readiness
- A dated service record naming the products used.
- No visible slime or mold in the bin, door, chute or curtain.
- Scoop stored outside the ice.
- Bin drain with an air gap and no standing water.
- Manufacturer's cleaning instructions on file.
The FDA Food Code requires ice makers and bins to be cleaned at the manufacturer's frequency, or often enough to prevent soil and mold (§4-602.11(E)(4)).
Water hardness by area
Your schedule should match your water. SFPUC water averaged 62 mg/L hardness in 2025 and EBMUD plants sampled 16–64 mg/L; Zone 7 groundwater averaged 318 mg/L and Santa Clara County groundwater averages over 250 mg/L. See hard water by area.
What you need to do on the day
- Plan for the machine to be out of service for part of a day; book outside your busiest hours.
- Stock bagged ice from an approved source to cover service.
- Clear access to the machine, bin and condenser.
- Have the model and serial number and your last cleaning date handy.
Common findings on a cleaning visit
| Finding | What we do |
|---|---|
| Scale on evaporator and trough | Descale; recommend filter and interval |
| Pink or black slime in chute and curtain | Hand-clean and sanitize; suggest a shorter schedule |
| Greasy condenser | Clean coil; explain placement options |
| Expired filter cartridge | Replace |
| Worn gasket, slow drain, early wear | Report and quote before any repair |
Brands and models
We service Manitowoc (Indigo NXT, NEO), Hoshizaki (KM, F, DCM), Scotsman (Prodigy, Prodigy ELITE, nugget), Ice-O-Matic (CIM, GEM, MFI), Follett (Horizon Elite, Maestro Plus, Symphony Plus) and other brands, following each manufacturer's procedure and approved products.
Cleaning plus inspection
Because the machine is open, each cleaning doubles as an inspection: we check the condenser fan, water valve, pump, sensors, drain, gaskets and, on flakers, auger load. Problems found early cost less to fix. See maintenance plans to put cleanings on a schedule.
How often
At least at the manufacturer's interval. Many specify every six months; hard water, yeast-heavy kitchens, bars and healthcare often need every three or four months. The FDA Food Code requires ice makers and bins to be cleaned at the manufacturer's frequency, or often enough to prevent soil or mold. See cleaning and the health code.
Brands
We clean Manitowoc, Hoshizaki, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, Follett and other brands, using each manufacturer's approved products. See why the right cleaner matters.
Book a cleaning
To book, call during office hours (8 AM to 5 PM). We cover Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and San Francisco counties, and work is done by EPA-certified technicians.
See also ice machine cleaning and sanitizing and maintenance plans.
Cleaning vs a cleaning plan
A one-time cleaning resets the machine. A schedule keeps it that way and keeps your log current for inspections.
When to call a technician
Book a professional clean if you see slime, odor or scale, if the inspector flagged the machine, or if it has been longer than the manufacturer's interval.
Open 7 days, 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM. CA Lic. #776244.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an ice machine cleaning take?
It depends on the machine and how scaled it is. Plan for the machine to be out of service for part of a day.
Do you use the manufacturer's cleaner?
Yes. We use the products each manufacturer approves for its machines.
Can cleaning fix slow ice production?
Often. Scale on the evaporator and a dirty condenser are leading causes of slow ice.
Do you clean ice dispensers?
Yes, including chutes, nozzles and drip trays.
How often should a bar's ice machine be cleaned?
At least at the manufacturer's minimum, and in practice every three to four months because airborne yeast and sugar feed slime.
