Quick answer

Beyond Manitowoc, Hoshizaki, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic and Follett, commercial kitchens run many other brands. Their machines use the same building blocks: an evaporator or auger, a water system, sensors and a refrigeration circuit. A refrigeration technician can diagnose them the same way.

Brands we commonly see

BrandKnown for
CorneliusIce machines and beverage/ice dispensers
Kold-DraftLarge, dense cubes favored by bars
KoolaireValue cube machines (a Manitowoc brand)
BremaCompact cube, gourmet and flake machines
Blue AirValue cube machines
Atosa, AvantcoValue undercounter and modular cubers sold through restaurant suppliers

How we approach any brand

  1. Identify the machine type: batch cuber, flaker, nugget or dispenser.
  2. Pull the model's service documentation where available.
  3. Read stored codes or lights.
  4. Time a cycle and compare with the spec sheet.
  5. Check the universal failure points: water, scale, condenser, sensors, bin control, refrigeration.
  6. Quote the repair and part lead time before work starts.

Common issues by brand type

TypeBrandsTypical issues
Value cubersAtosa, Avantco, Blue Air, KoolaireCondenser heat, scale, bin control, part lead times
Bar specialistsKold-DraftDense cubes take longer to freeze; scale and water system care matter
Compact and specialtyBremaUndercounter heat, drains, scale
Dispensing systemsCorneliusDispense mechanism, chute hygiene, scale

What to have ready when you call

  • Brand, model and serial number (on the data plate, usually on the back or behind the front panel).
  • What changed: less ice, no ice, leaks, noise, lights.
  • Any code, light or beep pattern.
  • When it was last cleaned and when the filter was changed.

Parts availability

Parts for value brands can take longer to source than for the largest manufacturers. That can tip an older machine toward replacement if a major part fails.

Same rules for every brand

  • Clean and sanitize at the manufacturer's interval. See health code basics.
  • Filter the water and descale. See hard water.
  • Keep the condenser clean and the room ventilated.

Whatever the badge on the front, our EPA-certified technicians can diagnose it, across Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and San Francisco counties.

Cleaning applies to every brand

Whatever the brand, the FDA Food Code requires ice makers and bins to be cleaned at the manufacturer's frequency or often enough to prevent soil and mold (§4-602.11(E)(4)). If you cannot find your machine's interval, the major brands' six-month minimum is a reasonable floor, shortened for hard water or yeast-heavy rooms. Use the cleaner the manufacturer names; on plated evaporators, nickel-safe products. See choosing a cleaner.

Buying a value brand?

Check where parts come from, the warranty terms, and whether local technicians service it. A lower purchase price can be offset by longer downtime when a part has to ship. Compare with total cost of ownership.

Ice types across these brands

BrandMachine types offered
CorneliusCube machines and ice and beverage dispensers
Kold-DraftLarge, dense cube machines
KoolaireCube machines
BremaCube, gourmet and flake machines

Check your machine's spec sheet; lines change over time.

Owner checks for any brand

  1. Power, breaker and mode switch (ice, not clean or off).
  2. Water valve open and filter in date.
  3. Condenser grille clean and vents clear.
  4. Bin control not blocked.
  5. Lights or codes written down before a single reset.

See ice machine not making ice and slow production.

Refrigerant on newer units

Newer self-contained machines from any brand must meet EPA's 150 GWP limit for most sizes from 1 January 2026, which usually means R-290. Make sure your technician is trained for it. See R-290 ice machines.

When a part is hard to get

If a part for an uncommon or older model is backordered, a technician can sometimes restore partial production, suggest a compatible universal part where the manufacturer allows it, or help you weigh replacement. Ask for the lead time in writing. See repair vs replace.

Keep your records

Photograph the data plate, keep the manual (most manufacturers post them online by model), and log cleanings and repairs. It makes every future service call faster, whatever the brand.

Choosing a service company for a less common brand

  • Ask whether they have worked on your machine type (cuber, flaker, dispenser).
  • Ask how they source parts and typical lead times.
  • Ask whether they carry the cleaner your manufacturer approves.
  • Ask whether they are EPA certified and trained on the refrigerant your machine uses.

Cool Aid is a C-38 licensed refrigeration contractor with EPA-certified technicians.

Older and discontinued machines

Many machines outlive their production run. If your model is discontinued, it can usually still be repaired while parts exist. When a major part is no longer available, plan a replacement before the next failure rather than during it.

Book service

Call with the brand, model and serial number. Office hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM.

Keep the manual

Save a PDF of the manual where staff can find it.

When to call a technician

If your machine shows a fault you cannot find in the manual, or production stays low after the basics, call a technician with the model and serial number ready.

Open 7 days, 8 AM to 5 PM, with emergency service until 9 PM. CA Lic. #776244.
